Goin' Out West

There's a Tom Waits song I love from Bone Machine called Goin' Out West. I've had it in my head for a couple days because I'm on my way to California! If only the lyrics were true....
Well I'm goin' out west
Where the wind blows tall...
They got some money out there
They're giving it away
I'm gonna do what I want
And I'm gonna get paid

I'm flying out to LA for the SCBWI conference- Yeah! My printer broke down just as I was getting ready to print pages for my dummy and portfolio. So I had to scramble to have other people print them. After lots of stress everything is ready. Of course it cost plenty to have my stuff printed- almost $200. That was my food money. I may be eating that portfolio before the weekend is over.
I can't wait to be there!!!

When Zak convinces his brother Avery to go hiking with him, it's double the fun! From the top of the mountain they finally find what they've been wishing for- a city full of new friends.

This is the last color spread for my dummy and I'm getting ready to put it together now!

Avery and Zak find a city-

I'm excited about how this turned out! I was trying to finish it quickly and I also managed to give myself a migraine carving way too many hours yesterday.

This spread from my picture book dummy shows the moment when these two brothers climb to the top of a mountain and find out they aren't the only two people in the world. They just found a city full of brand new friends!

Here is a close-up of the detail in the carving of the city.

This weekend I send out bunch of postcards to Art Directors advertising our great children's illustration site- The Visual Storytellers Studio.

A winter party in July

I finished painting this print for my dummy, The Rest of the World. It actually took me two tries. I came close on the first one, but this one is best. I have one more full spread to finish before putting the dummy together- all in time for LA SCBWI coming up soon!
