These are photos of a new print I'm working on for the header of this blog. It's very long and skinny- 4x17 inches. For linocuts like this, I carve the whole image backwards including the letters and words. Then when it's inked and you lift the paper off, the words appear the right way on the paper. It works just like a stamp does. If you look at the image or text on a rubber stamp it will look backwards. But then when you make the stamp, the image is correct on the paper. Ta-da!

New Lucky linocut
I just finished this new print from my story about Lucky the dump truck. For each print I do, I transfer the drawing backwards onto a piece of artist linoleum. I carve the linoleum with fine tools and then roll black ink over the raised surface. I lay a piece of paper over the ink and rub the back to make a print. When the ink is dry, I paint it with watercolor.

Evolution of a Dump Truck
Lucky is the name of this happy red dump truck. He's gone through 4 different incarnations. The top print was done directly from a sketch without much thought. Oooh, but those lips are kind of scary!
This bottom print is what Lucky looks like now. I think he's very handsome.
I am just finishing up the dummy for this story and I will post photos of it soon.

Welcome
Hey, the first post on my new blog!
I'm an artist who's been concentrating on illustrating and writing for children for the last year and a half. I will be posting artwork from stories I'm developing.
I'll show a little about how I work. I'm a printmaker and I like doing linocuts with watercolor like the image above.
I also have some great ideas for collaborations to try on this blog. That means your art, too!
Be back soon....
